Different

On a medical campus where space is scarce and sustainability is serious business, SC Engineers did something unexpected: we turned a parking structure into a utility hero.

Our Success

What started as a 1,260-space garage now doubles as a key energy asset—powering UC San Diego’s mission to cut carbon, cool smarter, and future-proof their campus for decades to come. It’s not just a place to park—it’s where infrastructure innovation found a surprising home.

Built Different

“Who says thermal storage tanks can’t be beautiful?”

UC San Diego needed a smarter, more sustainable way to meet long-term chilled water demand on its growing East Campus. The catch? No space. Not unless you count the center of a brand-new parking structure. So, we got creative.

Two 1.2-million-gallon TES tanks

now live inside the garage’s atrium—bringing natural ventilation, daylight, and big energy wins.

Open-Loop Design Magic

We ditched traditional heat exchangers and used smart backpressure valves for better efficiency and less energy loss.

BIM-Modeled and Pre-Commissioned

Controls were tested before they were ever installed—cutting start-up time and system hiccups.

A Garage that Gives Back

This is a Parksmart®-certified structure with LED lighting, daylight harvesting, EV charging, and motion sensors baked in.

We didn’t just save space—we made space smarter.

Built Better

“Chilled water that saves millions? Now that’s cool.”

This TES system isn’t just clever—it’s a powerhouse:

5–7% boost in plant energy efficiency

$4.2M in energy savings over the next 50 years

22,890 ton-hours of thermal storage

Keeps the system steady during peak hours and emergency scenarios

Cleaner air and steadier cooling

Mean better outcomes for UCSD’s healthcare buildings

Award-winning design

Parksmart certified and backed by SDG&E for permanent load shifting

“This project turned a parking structure into a critical piece of our sustainability infrastructure.”
— UC San Diego Facilities Rep

Turns out, when infrastructure pulls double-duty, everyone wins.

Built for What's Next

“Future chill, guaranteed.”

This isn’t just a smart retrofit—it’s a launchpad for what’s next:

Scalable piping and controls

The piping and control strategy were designed with modularity in mind. The campus can add future TES or adapt control sequences for new utility plant configurations or connected buildings.

Shifts energy use off-peak

Saving money and reducing strain on the grid.

Sustainable, low-maintenance design

Keeps O&M costs low while keeping performance high.

Fully aligned with UC’s 2025 carbon neutrality goals

Proving that strategic infrastructure can be both invisible and invaluable.

What started as a parking garage now cools critical labs, supports hospitals, and powers the path to carbon-free operations.
