Job Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and technically proficient Controls Installation QA/QC - (Coordinator/Inspector/Supervisor) to oversee and ensure the quality, accuracy, and compliance of all Building Automation System and controls subcontractor installation activities. This role is critical in maintaining installation standards, protecting system integrity, and ensuring project schedules are met without compromising quality.
The Controls Installation QA/QC (Coordinator/Inspector/Supervisor) will be responsible for verifying that all BAS/controls installations—including conduit, wiring, devices, controllers, and network infrastructure—are installed in accordance with design documents, specifications, and industry best practices. This individual will serve as the field-level quality authority representing the system integration team, working closely with our mechanical team, controls contractors, electrical contractors, commissioners, and project management.
Key Responsibilities
- Installation Quality Assurance & Field Verification
- Perform daily field inspections of building automation installation work across active construction projects.
- Verify the correct installation of:
- Control conduit pathways and support methods
- Low-voltage and communication wiring practices (routing, labeling, termination, shielding, grounding)
- Field devices (sensors, actuators, valves, dampers, flow switches, etc.)
- Control panels, controllers, and network hardware
- Ensure installations comply with:
- Project specifications and control sequences
- Approved submittals and shop drawings
- Applicable electrical codes and industry standards
- Identify installation deficiencies early and provide clear corrective direction to subcontractors.
- Network Infrastructure & Systems Readiness
- Validate BAS network architecture readiness, including:
- IP network backbone and field-level communication networks
- BACnet/IP, MS/TP, and other protocol integrity
- Device addressing, termination, and segmentation
- Confirm proper installation of network switches, routers, and communication trunks supporting BAS integration.
- Coordinate with IT, electrical, and mechanical teams to ensure system connectivity is complete and functional prior to commissioning
- Schedule & Construction Coordination
- Actively monitor installation progress against project schedules and milestones.
- Identify risks to schedule due to incomplete or improper installation.
- Work with subcontractors to streamline installation sequencing and eliminate rework.
- Participate in coordination meetings with general contractors, electrical contractors, and BAS subcontractors.
- Drive accountability for installation productivity without compromising quality.
- Technical Documentation & Field Communication
- Read, interpret, and enforce compliance with:
- Mechanical, electrical, and controls construction drawings
- Control diagrams, riser diagrams, and network architecture drawings
- Identify conflicts, design gaps, or constructability issues and develop clear documentation for resolution.
- Prepare and submit:
- RFIs (Requests for Information) to resolve design ambiguities or conflicts
- ASIs (Architect’s Supplemental Instructions) tracking and implementation coordination
- Maintain detailed field reports documenting progress, deficiencies, and corrective actions.
- Deficiency Tracking & Quality Control Process
- Establish and maintain a structured deficiency tracking system.
- Categorize issues by severity (safety, functional, schedule impact, compliance).
- Ensure timely closure of punch list items related to BAS/controls installation.
- Verify corrective work is completed properly before acceptance
- Coordination & Contractor Management
- Maintain strong working relationships with BAS subcontractors, electrical contractors, and commissioning agents.
- Provide firm but collaborative field leadership to enforce installation standards.
- Support a solution-driven environment focused on system performance and integration success.
- Adapt to dynamic jobsite conditions while maintaining quality expectations.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 5+ years of hands-on experience in BAS/controls installation, field execution, or related commissioning/QA/QC role.
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems, BAS architecture, and control system integration.
- Ability to read and interpret:
- Construction drawings (mechanical, electrical, controls)
- Control schematics and sequences of operation
- Network risers and panel layouts
- Proven field experience with low-voltage wiring, control devices, and BAS network infrastructure.
- Working knowledge of communication protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, and IP-based BAS systems.
- Experience identifying installation deficiencies and driving corrective actions in a construction environment.
- Demonstrated ability to create and manage RFIs and ASIs.
