Leadership Spotlight: 10 Questions for Tony Flor

Tony Flor, Corporate Counsel at Legence, gives us a look inside his world, sharing the experiences and insights that shape his approach to law, business, and life. From guiding the company through its recent IPO to navigating the day-to-day of in-house counsel, Tony shares how he balances people, process, and problem-solving. He also opens up about volunteering in his community, his favorite Houston spots, and even his top “movie lawyer” pick (we all have one...right?).

1. You joined us just in time for the big milestone of going public – how would you describe that experience?

It was an incredible experience and career highlight. It is every public company attorney’s dream to help launch their company’s IPO. The best part has been getting to know folks from all parts of the Company and to gain perspective on how my practice as Corporate Counsel impacts and improves their day-to-day. I am excited for the work we will do together now that we are a public company.

2. You’ve worked at law firms and now in-house – any big surprises about making the switch?

It has been cool to see how broad the practice of law is when you are in-house. At the law firm, you get really good at very specific things. That comes in handy when we are closing deals or papering up internal processes. However, a lot of our day-to-day in-house is driven by people and their business needs. That creates so much more variety and forces me to wear many hats. Those elements to my role have been a lot of fun.

3. What’s one compliance or policy myth you wish people would stop believing?

Sometimes, people view lawyers as a roadblock or obstacle along the way of a deal or process and are hesitant to reach out early. I think most folks will be happy to find that many of us are solutions-driven and want to make sure their goals are met.

4. Be honest: what’s the most “lawyerly” thing you’ve ever done in everyday life?

Haha. I always read click-through language on a website and am probably in the 10% of folks that always rejects unnecessary cookies.

5. You split your roots between Texas and Mexico – what do you like the most about each place?

Mexico City has a ton of great history and culture. It’s been awesome to go back and see ruins, roam museums and walk old streets. Not to mention the incredible food. That’s also one of my favorite things about Houston - you can find authentic food of any kind or type. I also love the hustle attitude of Houston. It makes you feel like anything is possible with a little bit of effort and persistence.

6. Houston is home base for you now – what’s your favorite hidden gem in the city?

Everyone should have a pint of Underground Creamery (look it up) at least once in their lifetime. You’ll need quick fingers when the purchase link goes live.

7. If you weren’t practicing law, what’s another career you could see yourself doing?

I think I would have put my finance degrees to use and tried my chance in private equity. I like how it combines data with people. It’s also about driving growth and value creation. At the end of the day, I like when my day-to-day touches many disciplines, which is why I like what I do now.

8. You spend time volunteering with Texas RioGrande Legal Aid – what inspired you to get involved?

Like most folks, I wanted to give back to my community. I grew up in the Rio Grande Valley and feel like I owe it a lot for the success I have enjoyed along the way. Texas RioGrande Legal Aid does some great pro bono work that helps people protect their property and preserve it for their families. Simple documents and a little bit of time with attorneys can go a long way. It was nice to be a part of those solutions.

9. Every attorney has a favorite “movie lawyer” – who’s yours and why?

My Cousin Vinny. He is funny, pays close attention and is always looking to learn and grow. As a lawyer, it is critical that we dig into the facts and stress test assumptions to ensure that those we represent get the treatment they deserve. It is also important that we listen to the folks on the ground and give them the room they need to tell the story and teach us why things matter to them and our business. Lastly, if we can keep things fun and light along the way, it makes getting through tough processes or situations much easier.

10. When you’re not working or volunteering, what’s your perfect weekend?

Spending quality time with my wife and almost two-year-old son is my favorite. Watching the Longhorns play on a Saturday is a close second.
