CMTA, a Legence company, is seeking a Director of Commissioning to lead, grow, and expand our regional commissioning practice. This is a strategic leadership role responsible not only for delivering exceptional commissioning services, but also for driving business development, growing client relationships, expanding market presence, and building a high-performing team. The Director will play a key role in developing new business opportunities by leading proposal strategy, defining project scopes and fees, participating in client interviews, and identifying value-added solutions that position CMTA as a trusted commissioning partner.

In addition to leading business growth, the Director of Commissioning will establish the strategic direction, operational standards, client delivery model, and organizational structure for commissioning services across the region. This includes oversight of new building commissioning, retro-commissioning, recommissioning, continuous commissioning, and related building performance services.

  • Lead business development efforts for commissioning services, including cultivating client relationships, identifying new opportunities, developing proposal strategy, preparing project scopes and fees, participating in client interviews, and identifying value-added solutions that drive regional growth.
  • Serve as the senior client-facing leader for commissioning services, acting as a trusted advisor to owners, architects, contractors, engineers, and internal project teams.
  • Manage and execute commissioning services for large and complex projects across the region.
  • Build, manage, mentor, and develop a team of commissioning professionals, including specialists, project leads, and technical staff.
  • Establish consistent commissioning processes, tools, documentation standards, testing procedures, and quality control practices across all projects.
  • Oversee commissioning services for large, complex, and high-profile projects across the region, ensuring alignment with owner requirements, design intent, construction schedules, and CMTA quality expectations.
  • Provide senior technical leadership across HVAC, plumbing, electrical distribution, lighting, fire alarm, security, nurse call, controls, and other building systems.
  • Partner with internal engineering and construction administration teams to identify commissioning needs early in the project lifecycle and ensure commissioning activities are integrated into project planning and execution.
  • Review and guide technical execution on equipment submittals, shop drawings, owner’s project requirements, basis of design documents, commissioning plans, pre-functional checklists, functional test procedures, and final commissioning reports.
  • Provide executive oversight of pre-functional inspections, field observations, equipment startup coordination, functional performance testing, issue resolution, and retesting efforts.
  • Lead the development of commissioning plans and test procedures based on industry standards, project requirements, and best practices.
  • Ensure commissioning deliverables support sustainability certifications and building performance goals, including B3, LEED, WELL, and related programs.
  • Monitor emerging technologies, codes, industry standards, building systems trends, and commissioning best practices to keep CMTA’s services competitive and technically current.
  • Support owner training, operations and maintenance transition planning, systems documentation, and long-term building performance strategies.

Desired Experience and Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of commissioning, building performance, MEP design, construction administration, energy services, or related experience.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience, including direct team management, staff development, project oversight, client management, practice leadership, or business development leadership.
  • Proven success leading business development efforts, including client relationship management, proposal strategy, scope development, fee development, interviews, and growing commissioning services within existing and new client accounts.
