Qualcomm Powers Up Data Center Expansion with Efficient Design

Qualcomm collaborated with A.O. Reed & Co. to enhance the efficiency of their 1.7 MW data center for expansion and reliable operation.

A.O. Reed managed the mechanical and plumbing upgrades in this design-assist project.

Customer Needs

The project included unique design characteristics to meet Qualcomm’s needs:

  • Additional data space
  • Cooling backup contingencies
Key Strategies Implemented

The project included the design of two new single-story CMU buildings. To adequately back up in case of mechanical failure, the team added a thermal storage tank to support the 500-ton air cooled backup chiller in the main central plant.

In addition, the team installed:

  • 48 in-row cooling units capable of operating with inlet water of 61 degrees
  • 12,000-gallon tanks
  • Rooftop package cooling units
  • Rooftop dehumidification units
  • Floor drains
  • Industrial water
