Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza Revamps Systems for $15K Annual Savings

CMTA conducted an investment-grade audit of Mohegan Sun Arena, identifying energy-saving needs and outdated equipment. Critical upgrades included 73 water source heat pumps, parking lot lighting, and refrigeration systems.

CMTA collaborated with the engineering team, prioritizing budget and timelines. Using a phased approach, they designed energy-efficient HVAC and refrigeration systems, with ICS managing construction for the project, resulting in $15,870 in annual savings.

Key Strategies Implemented

To alleviate financial pressure, CMTA secured $2,000,000 in grant funding from the American Rescue Act.

CMTA and ICS utilized a multi-phased approach to accelerate the project. The design comprised three phases:  

  • Phase 1: water source heat pump (WSHP) renovation, replacing 73 existing WSHPs
  • Phase 2: exterior lighting upgrades in the main parking lot of the arena, including new site lighting and future ticketing booth electrical feeds
  • Phase 3: replacement of the23-year-old R22 refrigeration system for the ice floor with a new high-efficiency industrial grade refrigeration system
